Job Description / Duties

Direct Patient Care: working within the licensed scope of practice, the chiropodist:
• Screens new patients and refers for emergency care when needed
• Obtains a complete chiropody history, assessing client's foot health status and developing and implementing a management plan in conjunction with the patient
• Assesses, recognizes and treats diseases and disorders of the foot area, including prescribing medications within scope, ordering (through Physicians) diagnostic tests and using palliative and physical treatment modalities
• Provides wound care with appropriate medication prescription and case management
• Performs invasive procedures and minor surgery on the foot as necessary,
• Diagnoses, prescribes, fits and manufactures orthotics
• Provides foot care, foot wear and foot health education to patients as needed
• Maintains complete and accurate medical records in accordance with the regulatory agency's standards of practice and the policies of the health centre
• Participates in chart reviews and discussion of problem cases
• Communicates patient test findings and on-going treatment plan to other health care professionals
• Provides home visit services within the CHC catchment areas as required
• Provides foot care services in designated outreach settings
• Makes appropriate referrals to external and internal services to address patients’ social determinants of health

Health Promotion and Education
• Works with one’s service team and other teams across the organization to develop chiropody health promotion activities in the community by identifying chiropody needs and increasing awareness of services
• Provides education/in-services to CHC staff as needed/required
• Provides education/ in-services to other health professionals in the community
• Collaborates with own team and other teams across the organization to identify and provide health education to target groups

Administration
• Assists in the administration of the CHC by identifying the need for and developing protocols and procedures to improve client services
• Maintains complete and accurate clinical records
• Participates in all relevant CHC meetings as required
• Provides statistical information as required by the centre
• Assists in the planning and programming of CHC services by participating in committees and meetings and sharing information obtained through contact with clients, and contributing to planning and budget processes
• Maintains and develops professional competence through appropriate continuing education
• All other duties as required

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Graduate of an accredited college of podiatric/chiropodial medicine. (Designation: D.Ch., D.Pod.M., D.P.M.)
• Member in good standing (current registration) with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario
• Full license, including administering substances by injection and prescribing drugs
• Certification in Local Anaesthesia, Soft Tissue Surgery, Injections, Pharmacology is preferred
• At least 2 years’ experience, preferably in a primary care or community health setting
• Proficiency in the use of computer technology and various software applications
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency in the use of computer technology and various software applications
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated respect for diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility with the ability to work collaboratively and positively with others
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of community-based health care and resources
• Experience working with individuals with substance use and persistent mental health issues is an asset
• Familiarity and understanding of Social Determinants of Health, Population Health and Equity in Health Care including an understanding of Anti-Racism and appreciation of Anti-Racism in the Ontario and Canadian context, and in particular Anti-Black and Anti-Indigenous Racism
• Police clearance documentation will be required for employment
• Proof of triple COVID-19 vaccination status will be required for employment

The Chiropodist is an independent, primary health care professional, licensed to recognize and treat disease, disorders and dysfunctions of the foot region of the lower limbs, by therapeutic, palliative or surgical means. Within the CHC setting, the Chiropodist practices as a member of the multidisciplinary primary health team. The goal of the Chiropodist is to act within his/her scope of practice to optimize the mobility, comfort and independence of patients from all age groups and emphasizes health promotion and client education.

This position is expected to work onsite.
